101 Gourmet Cake Bites

I have been waiting and waiting for this cook book by Wendy Paul!  It came just in time for my daughters 5th birthday party next week!   We are doing a carnival theme and the idea of cake pops just fits in perfectly!  The only problem?  Choosing which flavor we are going to do!!

I made a huge list of flavors I want to try- but Key Lime Pie, Raspberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Chip Cookie and Even More S'more (oh and Caramel Apple...) are among the top ones.  How do I choose?!?  I guess I will have to make them all! 

Wendy Paul's book is so user friendly that even if you have never made cake pops before you will be cooking them like a pro in no time at all.  She gives very clear instructions (and pictures- Yeah!) on how to make the cake pops and how to coat them.  Last time I tried to coat mine it was a mess- I wish I would have had Wendy Paul' book then!

My thoughts:

I loved this book!  I liked that it wasn't just a novel or just a discourse on Grace.  It was a great combination of both!  I learned a lot about "Impractical Grace" as the author puts it as I enjoyed the story.  For those who don't normally read novels (or pure doctrinal books) this is a great combination of both and will appeal to many readers!  If you are looking for a great book in your life to inspire you to change, forgive and love.... this is a great one!  You can find it on Amazon!  Enjoy!

101 Gourmet Cupcakes {Review & Giveaway}

This book is worth throwing that whole "Lets diet" New Years Resolution right out the door for!  I LOVE the mouth-watering photos on nearly EVERY page!  The recipes are so easy to follow and fun to make.  Since I was looking for another reason to make cupcakes- I was SOO excited to hear that a party coming up is going to have gourmet cupcakes for the treat and they were looking for people to volunteer to bring some.  I quickly wrote down my name!

My thoughts:

I had a hard time getting into this book actually. I guess I thought it was a different genra than it turned out to be. I read about half way through it before I stopped. It is a little slow but that is ok if that is what I would have been expecting.

Project: Organization Book Review

Ok.. so it may be a little early for you to be thinking about your New Years Resolutions... but I am pretty sure most of you have a goal to be more organized!!  If so... you will love this book!

SMS Thoughts:

I was really excited to review this book, "Project: Organization".  I'd like to think that many areas of my life are already organized, but there is always room for improvement.  I'm definitely better at keeping certain areas of my life more organized than others.  As I read this book I felt like I was taking a class in college:  organization 101.  It is very motivating and inspiring!  It shares a lot of organizational ideas for several aspects of life including: the home, family life, holidays, important occasions, and time.  Each section shared specific details for becoming and staying organized in each of these categories.  I learned a few things from this book that I am going to try to implement in my own home life, but several things I already knew and did.  However, I definitely think that this book would be a wonderful tool to use for those who feel they need a lot of advice in getting their homes, their time, and their families more organized.  Overall, this book is very helpful and I'm glad I read it!

My thoughts:

I loved this book! (My kids probably won't love it....) I LOVE how Marie lists the things that your children should do at certain ages. She has a "Master Plan" for ages 2-6, 6-12, 12-18. This gives you an idea of what to expect from your children and how to implement it. Marie also lists "Summertime Chores" that your children should get in the habit of doing and learning. I love how she walks you through different senarios and helps you figure out what you should say. There is SO much in this book! I love it and will keep in handy so that I can refer to it often. I recommend this book 100%!

My thoughts:

I have loved this series!  I think this might of been my least favorite one since it had a lot about the dark evil Mistress Jane.  I did however still like the overall story just maybe not so much for my kids to read at an early age.  The book moves quickly and keeps your attention like the first 3.  If you are looking for a fun read that has a little bit of everything in it I would recommend this one.

Organize as you Go {Review}

My thoughts:

This book is FABULOUS!  I loved how this book was easy to read.  Some organizing books are so involved that it is hard to follow their train of thought or figure out their complex systems.  I always love new ideas for how to keep my house organized so I loved reviewing this book.  Organize as You Go is broken up into seven different sections.  Marie Ricks gave organizational advice for every day use, holiday use, at home, during travel or moving, as well as suggestions to stay organized for the future.

I loved how Marie made organizing seem simple!  I will use her book as a reference guide for organizing my chaos.

Choke {review}

 Remember my book review on Pillage?  Well... here is the sequel!

  I really enjoyed to continue Beck Phillips journey with dragons.  Thanks to Shadow Mountain for once again giving me a great read.

The book starts out with Beck Phillips (15 year old) once again getting into trouble.  He hasn't learned his lesson from the last encounter with dragons and as you can tell from the cover of the book... another dragon is born.  So once again Beck has to figure out how to first hide the fact that this dragon was born and then try to figure out how to get rid of it!

I liked the first book Pillage better- but this book was interesting and held my attention well too.  I don't want to give too much of the book away so I won't go in to too many details but if you were intrigued by Pillage (as many of you mentioned you were...) then you have to read this book as well.

This book is great for all ages and would be a fun read a loud for a family trip.

Preserving the Harvest Book {Review & Giveaway}- CLOSED

I was so excited to get "Preserving the Harvest" from Storey Publishing ...that is until I had no harvest to preserve.  Apparently the dirt we bought had weed seed in it as well and well.... it overtook my entire garden before I could save it.  I am so sad!  We only had onions and peas this year.

However- If you had a great harvest this year then you will LOVE this book!



It could use a few colored pictures in there for me, but I love that it has an array of ideas of ways you can save your harvest and enjoy it throughout the winter.

It has 150 recipes for Freezing, Canning, Drying and Pickling Fruits and Vegetables!  It explains everything very well and has a lot of tips to help you succed!  I reccomend checking this book out!  (and making sure your dirt is weed-seed free!)

City of Angels {Review}

As soon as I started reading this book I couldn't put it down.  Luckily I read it on Labor Day so my husband was able to take up the slack :).  First of all I have to say - it took me a while to actually pick this book up to read it because the cover was out of the ordinary of what I normally see and read.  I guess I just have to say that the "you can't judge a book by its cover" saying is totally true :)  I was addicted to this book right away.

"Rhea Jensen is your typical twenty-something single girl if by typical you mean a private investigator who studies ways to escape from handcuffs while waiting to take down another serial sleaze. But when a seemingly open-and-closed embezzlement case goes awry, her on-again-off-again boyfriend starts fooling around behind her back, and some Mormon missionaries stop her on the street during a stakeout, Rhea realizes her life is anything but typical even by her standards. "

Rhea is a private investigator who is really good at what she does.  She has always lived a good life due to the promise she made to her mother to not smoke, drink or sleep around.  I loved following Rhea around as she solved her cases and hangs out with her best guy friend.

 This book isn't lying when it says "Mystery, Romance, Action, Mormons....This book has everything!"

Annabel Karmel: You Can Cook {Review and Giveaway}- CLOSED

Over the weekend my daughters and I decided to try out some of the recipes from the book I received by Annabel Karmel. The cookbook is called, “You Can Cook” and it’s specifically written for kids. After watching an episode of Master Chef last week my five year old daughter told me that she wanted to be a chef so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. Initially I was a little disappointed with the book I was sent because my favorite part of cookbooks are the pictures and this one had the first few pages in color but then the rest of the book printed in a somewhat pixely black and white grayscale print, I assumed this was only because I was receiving a copy to review and that the one in stores will be in full color. There was also a duplicate page spread in my book but again I assumed it was just a rough draft of the book itself and I was just grateful not to be missing any pages.

I liked that the beginning of the book talked about kitchen hygiene, safety and equipment. My five year old and I went over all of this before starting anything. The first thing we decided to make was the Tomato and Cheese toast. It looked delicious and it was time for lunch so it worked out perfectly! It was an easy thing to start with and grandma and grandpa ate it with us too- everyone loved it! My five year old was so proud that she had made most of it all by herself with only mom’s stand by guidance.

The next day we decided to bake something, both my 5 year old and 6 year old helped with this one. Now I must first say that I consider baking a technical art and that it is so important to be precise with measurements. We decided to try the “Best Muffins Ever” and the variation we chose was for Double Chocolate ones. The directions, ingredients and measurements were fairly easy to understand and laid out well but when it came to the substitutions you needed to make for the double chocolate muffins it was a little confusing. They referred to the flour and cocoa powder measurements in tablespoons rather then in cups like the original recipe laid out. Now being one who loves to bake I knew that 1/4 cup is 4 T. The recipe called for 1 1/4 cups of flour and the substitution said to replace 2 tbsp flour with 2 tbsp cocoa powder. There was also something else that was worded similar to that we had to sit down and figure out. To me that’s quite confusing and being a book for children I would think that it would be written in a little easier terms. So it did take me a few minutes to figure everything out but the muffins ended up great! We actually baked them right before hosting a football game party at our house so they were gone within minutes and we didn’t even get a picture.

There were a few things in the book that my kids thought didn’t look very good- specifically the fish dishes but I like the variety of recipes they had and I liked that they weren’t too simple but still great for kids. My kids begged to make the smoothies in there but we weren’t stocked with the correct ingredients so we’ll be pulling the book out again in the next few days.

Flipping for Phonics {Review}

I was SO excited when Flipping for Phonics sent me their fabulous combo kit!

As you may know my daughter just turned 4 and is starting pre-school soon.  She kept telling me that she was going to be able to read when she was 4.  I wasn't really sure how to approach the whole "teaching her how to read" thing. 

I pulled out Flipping for Phonics the other day and sat down to watch their instructional video first.  It looked easy enough so we dove right in and started learning about the "ot" family. 

On Flipping for Phonics website the video talks about how their daughter learned how to read in 20 minutes.  I was pretty skeptical of this to be honest.  However when we were working on all the "ot"'s (dot, pot, hot....)  my daughter picked up on them quickly and in about 5-10 minutes knew them.  (She did already know the sounds really well though- so we weren't starting from ground zero)

I think this is a great learning tool.  I love the flipping book and how it makes changing words around SO easy!  The flipping book can make 2000 different words and they are all listed in the back of the book so you can use it for a reference. The other books they provide in the combo package allow your child to practice what they just learned.  There is also stickers, a coloring book and 2 music cd's.
